Patsy, Anne, and a Little Spice- Together at Last opens July 15th

GIRL POWER TAKES CENTRE STAGE AT NEW FESTIVAL PREMIERING IN CHARLOTTETOWN JULY 15

Charlottetown, PE - Girl power is set to take centre stage in Charlottetown this summer with the premiere of the Together At Last Festival on July 15. The new festival, which will run for 8 weeks at the Delta Prince Edward by Mariott, will showcase female icons of the 20th century in three crowd-pleasing shows.

“We’re bringing Patsy Cline, Anne of Green Gables, and the Spice Girls to Charlottetown,” said Campbell Webster, co-producer of the festival. “It’s quite the line-up  of powerful women and memorable music, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.”

Earlier this year, Webster and his co-producers, Melanie Cantwell and Nick Whelan, sat down to brainstorm what they could bring to Charlottetown's theatre scene. The global pandemic proved to be a double-edged sword.

“On the one hand, we weren’t sure where the Island would be this summer in terms of re-opening and how that would impact tourism and the theatre scene,” said Cantwell. “But the pandemic also gave us a unique opportunity to reach out to acclaimed performers in Toronto and invite them to come to PEI for the summer. Normally, these talents would be fully booked, but this year things are obviously a little different.”

In the end, the trio of seasoned producers decided to take a leap of faith and launch a brand new festival featuring three distinctly different shows: A Closer Walk With Patsy Cline, Anne Mixtape, and Wannabe: A Spice Girls Tribute.

“We really wanted to bring a breadth of shows to the festival that will appeal to Islanders and visitors alike, as well as to different ages and musical tastes,” said Whelan.

Whelan, who is well-known in PEI’s theatre scene, has performed multiple productions of Anne & Gilbert - The Musical and also works with Cantwell on the CTV Toronto program, The Social. In addition to co-producing the three shows, Whelan will also perform in Anne Mixtape and as Little Big Man in A Closer Walk with Patsy Cline.

A Closer Walk With Patsy Cline will be familiar to some Islanders. The production, which celebrates one of country music’s greatest female artists, was a sell-out success as part of the Charlottetown Festival during the 1990s and 2000s. This time around, audiences will get to soak in the grand elegance of the Delta Ballroom as they take in the story of Patsy Cline through her powerful songs and compelling narrative.

But Patsy’s not the only female powerhouse headlining the Together At Last Festival. A tribute to Britain’s biggest female pop band of all time is also set to hit the stage on Charlottetown’s waterfront.

“We’re really excited that we were able to secure Wannabe for an 8-week run here in PEI,” said Cantwell, who lives in Toronto and works with CTV/Bell Media in live television, including The Social and Your Morning, as well as other Canadian and international productions. “In normal times, they would be booked solid with tours across the country and beyond. So it’s going to be a really unique opportunity for Islanders to enjoy this incredibly talented and fun tribute group.”

Wannabe: A Spice Girls Tribute is the brainchild of Toronto-based performers and friends Suzy Wilde, Barbara Johnston, Anika Johnson, Catherine Merriam and Jasmyn Fyff. Over the past six years, they have played across North America and beyond, been offered appearances on The Steve Harvey Show and The Ex Factor, and been approached by event organizers worldwide. And this summer, North America’s #1 Spice Girls tribute show will run each week during the Together At Last Festival.

“We knew we had to round out this fantastic female line-up of shows with a show inspired by PEI’s most famous redhead heroine, Anne of Green Gables ,” said Webster, who has produced sixteen seasons of Anne & Gilbert - The Musical on PEI. He has also licensed the production globally, from the National Arts Centre of Canada to Singapore, Australia, and many other locations around the world.

“Audiences love Anne of Green Gables and we couldn’t imagine a summer in PEI without a theatre production showcasing her,” said Webster. Neither of the Island’s most familiar Anne productions, Anne of Green Gables - The Musical or Anne & Gilbert - The Musical, will be performed on PEI this summer.

Anne Mixtape is a family-friendly revue that will feature popular songs from the Anne musicals, along with other East Coast tunes. The concert will play twice a week throughout the festival and promises to deliver big on energy and nostalgia.

“From the outset, we also knew it was critical that we host the festival at a top notch venue and secure a seasoned production company to bring everything together seamlessly,” said Webster. “We’re very grateful to our title sponsors, the Delta Prince Edward and House-Front Productions, as well as the Charlottetown Special Events Fund for believing in and supporting our new festival.”

The festival will premiere July 15 and run until September 4 at the Delta Prince Edward ballroom. A Closer Walk With Patsy Cline and Anne Mixtape will play weekly on Thursdays and Fridays with  Wannabe: A Spice Girls Tribute playing every Saturday night.

“The Together At Last Festival is many things. It’s a celebration of incredible music and theatre. It’s a celebration of female powerhouses from different eras. And it’s a celebration of people being able to come together again to socialize and enjoy a show. We’re incredibly fortunate here on PEI to be able to host this new festival and we look forward to providing Islanders and visitors with live entertainment that’s heartwarming and spectacular,” said Webster.

Festival tickets will go on sale the week of June 14th. For more information, visit www.together-at-last.com

The other night, I was sharing a cocktail with my dear friend Barbara Johnston over Facetime and we got to discussing her upcoming annual holiday fundraiser, Jingle Babz.

“You know Suz,” she said between sips of Rum Negroni, “my motto has always been ‘Go big or go home. This year I say, why not do both? Go big AND go home!”

Well…. that’s what she’s doing this year. Quite literally.

With the help of 20+ performers and musicians from across the country, Johnston (aka, “Jingle Babz”) is inviting the world into her living room and delivering a complete virtual show. Borrowing themes from holiday specials of the past, from Judy Garland to Pee-wee Herman ( my personal favourite), Jingle Babz promises Christmas cards, carols, fireside chats, special guests, and maybe even a visit from Kris Kringle.

I’m delighted that I’ll be performing two original Christmas songs for the show.

It’s happening this Sunday and running through the holidays, so get your tickets now!

Jingle Babz and Friends present: A Virtual Holiday Concert Premiers December 20th at 7pm.  Tickets are $25 and ticket holders will have the opportunity to join the opening night cocktail party (for an extra $10). Courtesy of sponsor Isolation Cocktail, pre-party guests will get a recipe for the specially made Jingle Babz cocktail.

Portions of ticket sales will be donated to Sistering: a multi-service agency offering practical and emotional support to women and trans people from across Toronto who are homeless, precariously housed and/or socially isolated.

Living the Dream at CMTP

Barbara Johnston, Anika Johnson, and Nick Green are re-defining the online theatre experience with their new musical Living the Dream

Barbara Johnston, Anika Johnson, and Nick Green are re-defining the online theatre experience with their new musical Living the Dream

This fall, I’ve had the great pleasure of working as music director on a brand new musical by three of my favourite writers: Nick Green, Anika Johnson, Barb Johnston. With Mitchell Cushman at the helm as director and a cast of 14 outstanding performers from Sheridan College’s CMTP Program, we’ve had an unforgettable experience rehearsing, experimenting, troubleshooting and learning all of the ins and outs of designing a musical completely over Zoom.

Back when the writers were first conceiving of this piece, it was a very different show, but as it became clear that Covid-restrictions would limit us to rehearsing and performing on Zoom, they decided to make the most of the situation by seting the show on zoom and using the opportunity to write something about this very unique time we’re living in.

LIVING THE DREAM

What do you do when you’re feeling alone? Every Tuesday, Clare throws a Zoom party. A contemporary look at relationships and loneliness in the Instagram era, Living the Dream is the story of a group of friends told entirely though commercial breaks during a viewing party of a reality TV dating show.

The show itself is equal-parts heartbreaking and hilarious. Even after seeing it so many times, I still laugh out loud over and over again and the ending always makes me cry. The music is stunning- the songs are so good and so catchy and skillfully arranged. James Ervin created beautiful show tracks and all of the students became their own recording engineers when Sheridan shipped microphones to their houses so they could -pre-record their harmonies from their homes.

And also worth mentioning- Barb Johnston choreographed every number and she did such a brilliant job working with the performers and thinking outside the box with different angles and close-ups and “click-ography”. It’s quite spectacular!

I’m so thrilled to have been part of this process, working with my best friends and witnessing the creation of this brilliant new piece of theatre. Don’t miss it!

LIVING THE DREAM will be presented LIVE tomorrow, at 2pm, streamed to Youtube! The shows will be available to watch for the rest of the week, but ours will only be live tomorrow!

There are also two other exciting premiers happening later on in the day:

Sunday Oct 18th

2pm: Living the Dream, by Nick Green, Anika Johnson and Barb Johnston

5pm: Burden of proof by Rob W Kempson, Scott Christian , and La-Nai Gabriel

8pm: Almost a Full Moon by Charlotte Corbeil Coleman and Hawksley Workman

Hope you can make it!

"Crack of Doom" opens today at Toronto's Digital Fringe

COD (Aimée name corrected).jpg

Bravo Academy for the Performing Arts in associated with Bain & Bernard presents Crack of Doom as part of the Toronto Fringe Collective this year and digital excerpts are available TODAY through July 6.

I wrote this show in 2018 with my old pal Matt Bernard (Toronto Fringe Festival: Romeo & Juliet Chainsaw Massacre) as part of Bravo’s New Music Theatre Intensive program under the leadership of Melissa Bencic and since then, the show has been produced at Yellow Door Theatre and at Eden High School. We’ve been so lucky to be able to see different casts interpret the piece, and this year, we decided to team up with Bravo again to produce a new draft of the show at the Fringe.

When the students and staff at Harrington High School receive the terrible news, they are forced to face the reality that their time on this earth is ending. Unless, of course, it all turns out to be a hoax.

Two musical numbers from Crack of Doom ( “Inside” and “Love Pentagon” ) will be available for on-demand streaming from July 4-6 as part of the Fringe Collective, a digital arts festival presented by the Toronto Fringe Festival. "Bathing Suit" to be featured in upcoming digital dance project

Leg Up Alliance presents six digital collaborations between Canadian composers/lyricists and choreographers this Saturday!

I’m so thrilled to share a second dance collaboration that I’ve been involved with! Leg Up Alliance, a non-for-profit organization that helps emerging artists ( spearheaded by Kayla James) has paired six choreographers with composer/lyricists with the goal of creating new dance pieces to new songs while shining the spotlight on some incredible dancers across the country.

My brilliant writing partner Barbara Johnston had the idea to submit our song“Bathing Suit”, from a show we created last year called Be Kind, Rewind. Sung by Kelsey Verzotti and mixed/ arranged by James Ervin, it’s a song about summer and swimming and loving the skin you’re in. We got to see a sneak peek of the finished number yesterday, and we were blown away by what we saw. Special shout-out to choreographer Michele Shuster for pouring so much love into our song!

These pieces premiere Saturday June 20th at 7pm. Proceeds from ticket sales ( donation based) go to Nia Centre for the Arts in support of the ongoing conversations surrounding racial injustices in the theatre world.

Nick Green’s Social Distancing Festival launches “Long Distance Art”

The last few months have presented a multitude of challenges for artists all over the world. Gigs canceled, contracts terminated, and forced isolation due to Covid-19 has left may of us feeling uncertain about the future and frustrated by not being able to express ourselves in the ways we normally would. But slowly, I’ve watched friends and creators start to think outside the box and over the past few months, there has indeed been a great deal of new art being generated, often in unexpected forms, and some real artistic visionaries have started emerging- they are helping us define what it means to be creators in 2020. One such visionary is my friend Nick Green, who launched The Social Distance Festival right when social isolating was starting to be practiced across Canada. Nick’s online platform has brought artists together from all over the globe to celebrate the arts at a time when we need them more than ever.

Today, Nick launched a brand new project called “Long Distance Art”, which partners creators in different parts of the world, and offers them an opportunity to make something together. My two long-time writing partners Anika Johnson ad Barbara Johnston and I were approached by Nick not long ago to partner with Tadhi Alawi, a brilliant choreographer and dancer from Dar es Salamm, Tanzania. Tahdi has choreographed and filmed a breathtaking performance to our original song “Wild Heart” and it is absolutely magical. We are beyond thrilled to be collaborating with Tahdi and are honoured to have been asked to participate in this groundbreaking initiative. The world just got smaller!
